The content needed for the documentary is a finished film from 5 to 15 minutes long with the main theme of Culture in the Digital Age. It will then include how music streaming platforms have changed the way people listen to and explore new music, to how they would before the internet was created. The media platform is social media such as Instagram and Twitter; the company is CPM Media. The deadline for the media product is January 22nd 2021 and the resubmission deadline is February 5th 2021

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCLIdNFwznM&t=26s - Harry Stainer Documentary

I looked at a short documentary made by Harry Stainer on YouTube which he and a couple of people he interviewed, spoke about how the digital age has changed film in how accessible it is now to film and produce your own short film and the first film made using some digital elements, which was Star wars Episode 1 then the sequel to this which was Star Wars Episode 2 was shot using only digital. He had constructed his documentary by using short interviews clipped together with the key things they had said. He also spoke directly to the camera while using clips from his own short film and during the opening of the documentary, he included photos all in black and white from behind the scenes of big films such as Jaws, Avengers and Star Wars. For my own documentary i would like to apply some of the techniques used in the short documentary such as clips from the interviews, speaking directly to the camera while showing clips from ads or podcasts which are featured in and or for streaming platforms such as Spotify and SoundCloud.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDX8KX7yTqY - Sabrina Sarah Sakhai Documentary

I looked at another short documentary made by Sabrina Sarah Sakhai on YouTube which they talk upon the Digital Age and what affects it may have had on the younger generation. They include a short interview with a University student who tells us about his uses of social media and I quote 'I think it is important to stay in the game', which he means social media e.g. Facebook and Snapchat. After this short interview with the Leeds University Student, they ask the question of how does the digital age compare to life before the internet. They then showed a interview with a Lecturer at the University of Leeds called Judith Stamper who at the time of the Documentary release in 2015 was 63, meaning they had grew up way before the internet was around. She tells us that teenagers have always acted the same even from her teenage days, just now with social media it means teenagers of today have more risks revolving around the excessive use of social media. I want to use a interview like this in my own documentary where ask people views on music availability and music as a whole in the digital age. Their use of overlaying audio over videos is what I would like to use as well for my documentary to show viewers a clearer picture of what I am speaking about. Another thing that is brought up which links to what I am doing my documentary about is how it is easier two do certain things like speak to friends and find the right venues for music and many other things. This ties in to how it is much easier to explore and find new music since the internet, especially since the release of streaming platforms such as Spotify and SoundCloud. I will try to apple these two techniques used in their documentary to my own to make it clearer and easier to understand the subject behind the documentary.

Research -

Spotify was launched 2008, SoundCloud was launched 2007 and Deezer was launched in 2007 also.

Availability of music has changed since the internet was created because music streaming platforms such as Spotify and SoundCloud have made music readily available for everyone.

Ways of accessing music before the internet was by going to a music store and purchasing either a vinyl, cd or cassette tape with the music which someone may like or a new artist.

A artist only gets a certain amount of money from the number of streams/plays their song gets, with the streaming service profiting massively on that artists work.

Most streaming platforms allow anyone to use it by just signing up to use it, but a lot

of features are restricted to free subscription users. E.g. Spotify restricts unlimited skips and single play to free subscription users, meaning therein have all songs in shuffle at all times and only have six skips per hour.

But premium subscriptions have no features restricted, they even have extra features to use.

My research has informed my idea in giving me multiple ideas on what to base my documentary about, and in the end I made the decision to do it about music availability instead of cancel culture. The research I also done about certain aspects of streaming platforms, ranging from the certain features available on different plans, free and premium subscriptions, and how artists are paid for streams/ plays of their music helped as it gave me a better understanding about some positives and negatives of them In the digital age.

The questionnaire

I done on google docs about streaming platforms and how people listen to music helped as it gave me a wider perspective on how there my age listen to music, with most people using Spotify and SoundCloud, and a small percentage who still prefer to listen to physical copies of music. finding out this information about people may age and their ways of listen top music helped inform my idea more as I had a better understanding of others preferred way of listen to music.

Also, seeing people thoughts on one of the questions, Do you think music streaming platforms have changed the music industry for better or worse, seeing their answers and thoughts on the question also helped with my idea as it showed me that people have a good understanding about pros and cons of streaming platforms and the effects they can have in the digital age.

AC2 - I have chosen to use my idea on Music Availability in the Digital Age because i personally think it is an interesting topic to do a documentary about. I chose this idea instead of Cancel culture in the Digital Age because it could be seen as very controversial due the topics i wanted to speak upon if i had chosen to do it. Also, with music availability there is a lot more i can speak about, such as how streaming platforms have changed how people access music and the effects on the distribution of physical music e.g. Cd’s and Vinyls.

My idea meets the client brief as it is based around the target audience as well as a little to the age group.

The requirements will be met as it will be a short finished media product, as said in the brief with some experimental pieces. it will also meet the deadline of January 22nd 2021 and also the resubmission deadline of February 5th 2021.

Interview Questions -

What are your thoughts on Music in the Digital Age?

How do you think music has changed since the internet?

What do you think about music streaming platforms e.g. Spotify and SoundCloud?

Do you think music streaming platforms have changed the music industry?

Do you think music streaming platforms have changed the distribution of music?

And why?

Interviews -

For the interviews, I have asked two friends of mine, Jake Withers and Will Talbot, to be involved and they have all agreed to be involved in an interview individually.

The mind maps meet the brief of Culture in the Digital Age as they both are about two topics in the Digital Age which can also bear linked together as many artists experience cancel culture in their career which can either destroy their career as a artist or fuel it.

I have chose to do Music Availability in the Digital Age over Cancel Culture in the Digital Age as I personally think that it is a wider topic to speak on which I can go more in-depth about. Another reason is because cancel culture can be a very controversial topic to speak about due to different reasons people experience it.

I have recorded the first half of my script for the documentary, though we have to do it from home the continuity of the recordings may change if we are able to return to college be for the deadline.

I have made a short edit using then first half of the what I recorded for the documentary

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnrwTH2L5Ek&feature=youtu.be

For the short edit, the tools I had used on iMovie to put it all together was the crop tool for the photos and the trim tool for the videos. I also played with the volume of each clip to see how it differ with the photos playing over to make the audio more clear.

The edit starts with a mid shot of myself speaking directly to the camera, the while I am speaking  I played 4 different photos over it to show the music genres I mention while speaking. Then I start to speak about the different ways that we used to listen to music before the internet, I then showed a photo of a shop which sells cd's and vinyls to show the ways of experiencing music. This was to show what I was specifically talking about in that section of the small edit.

After that part of the documentary, I then spoke about the streaming platforms Spotify, SoundCloud and Deezer. I showed pictures of the information I had and was talking about over the clips. I spoke about when they were launched, where in which they were launched, who ran the company and any other information I had about them. This then concluded the short edit after I was finished speaking.

This screenshot is of the start of my test footage. I used the test footage for my documentary to be the opening. The actual footage itself was filmed on my phone from a straight on angle. The photos I used to layer over the were pictures of artists or something relating to the genres I acknowledged. The footage where the photos overlapped, when there was a mistake or long pause, I cropped the clip down to keep the flow of speech as smooth as possible.

This part of the test footage was just myself talking about how music was accessed before the internet and streaming platforms came around. I only used on picture to overlap because I thought that using too many wouldn't be fitting.

The last part of the test footage was a longer section where I spoke about 3 popular streaming services, Spotify, SoundCloud and Deezer.

Due to coronavirus restrictions and colleges being closed during the deadline and resubmission deadline, I am unable to get a hold of the interviews with other students I had done before the Christmas holidays and the lockdown. Now I will have to record new interviews over a call with the three students I had interviewed before.
